Gregory G. Barnett graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in 1981 with a degree in marine engineering. After graduation, he sailed as a licensed engineer on oceangoing vessels and integrated tug barge units. Later, he worked in a shipyard and then for 10 years in the transportation and risk management departments for a leading fruit company which shipped its fruit on owned and chartered vessels. Mr. Barnett managed a wide variety of insurance policies and claims involving cargo, hull, P&I, charterers’ liability, FD&D, container, property and aviation risks; he has also drafted bills of lading, charter parties, service contracts and contracts of affreightments and has extensive experience in crisis management during onboard casualty investigations. Since 1994 Mr. Barnett has been involved in all aspects of commercial litigation, specializing particularly in admiralty and maritime, insurance, employment discrimination contract drafting and real estate. His clients include underwriters, charterers, shippers and individuals located throughout the world. He has experience in litigation, arbitration, mediation and insurance coverage disputes in virtually every state in the United States and has been involved in several major international casualties involving ship and cargo damage.
